Generations of Passion; Malaya Optical Eye Experience

Saturday, August 31, 2013

Hi everyone!

When it comes to glasses, lens, sunnies etc I can be very particular. Only because I used to work as a sales assistant for an optical shop (among many of my part time work haha) So, gimmick and such won't work on me hehe (at least, I'd like to think so :P). Last month I was invited by OnlyBeauty to experience Malaya Optical Boutique at Damansara Uptown. Before I get started on sharing my experience, here's a quick video about the event :)

I was quite excited about this new experience, the reasons being, one, I have never been there before, and two, I would really love to see what Malaya Optical has to offer.

Farah interviewing Ryan Ho, you can check out the video here :D
My first impression of the boutique is that the atmosphere is very cozy and homey. It's where I can imagine families like to go to. Somehow I feel the boutique itself has a personal touch to it. I found out later was because Malaya Optical is a household name and it is now owned by Ryan Ho, the 3rd generation of Malaya Optical owner. Founded in 1957, Malaya Optical has catered and provided services to generations of families in the Klang Valley. Talk about passion that runs through the family!

And that's exactly what I see throughout the tour of the boutique, the explanations of mission, philosophy and services provided, that Ryan Ho, is very passionate about what he does. I can see that he loves Malaya Optical like family, literally! The passion is what drives him to make a trip to Malaya Optical an experience rather than a simple business transaction. The experience includes providing premium professional eye care services with the use of some of the best equipment. An example would be the Zeiss Machine. I was pleasantly surprised to see such equipment. I never knew it could be available in an eye boutique.

Zeiss machine
This machine is able to measure the distance of your eye to your glasses, giving a precise calculation to help in choosing the right power for your lens. It caters to more mature patients especially those who uses multifocal lens. This is also very useful for those with serious astigmatism and those with a higher power who wishes to pick a more accurate power for contact lens. Bottom line, the distance between your glasses and your eyes play an important role in determining the accurate power to give you a more comfortable feel by lessing the strain caused to your delicate eyes. And it is very helpful for those with higher power because their eyes are much more sensitive.

Other than that, they provide special diagnostic services such as Digital Retinal Imaging, IntraOcular Pressure and Sit Lamp assessment. The Digital Retinal Imaging is to screen for retinal problems such as macular degeneration, retina holes or detachment, or systemic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. The IntraOcular Pressure is to determine the fluid pressure inside the eye while the Sit Lamp is for contact lens fitting, corneal health assessment and many more. For a more detailed explanation, you can check it out here.

Impressive no? Most optical shop will only have equipments to check your eye power. For eye diagnosis, you have to go to an eye specialist. And most of these optical shop cannot cater to special conditions, they would advice the patients to consult an eye doctor first. I'm not saying Malaya Optical is equivalent to an eye specialist doctor, but it is closer to it compared to the rest ;)

By this point I was really impress. I would highly recommend Malaya Optical to my family and friends. (that rhymes lol)

Other than the very impressive equipments, Malaya Optical carries many brands of eyewear, from main stream to designer labels from around the world. If you are tired of the same glasses designs (hipster glasses for example haha) then you can find your pick here. Some of the brands they carry are:

Coach, Tag Heuer, Fendi, Elle, Nike, Bonia, CK, BYWP, John Richmon, Sama, Zero RH, Rudy Project, Moschino, Benetton, Esprit, Max Mara, Rayban, Robert Marc, Sover, Viktor & Rolf, Viviene Westwood, Aha, Andy Wolf, Blackfin, Byblos, Coco Song, Coppe + Sid, Derapage, Derek Lam, Dutz, Eco, Face Fonts, GF Ferrer, Guess, Mykita, Jf Rey, Lafont, Lotto, Masaki, Modo, Parasite, Public, Spivvy, Staffan Preutz, Undostrial, Try Change, White Out Glare, Wolfgang, & Zottes

And the list goes on lol.

Back to the other main event, is the introduction of the latest Paris Hilton sunglasses collection! There are 12 designs all together, ranging from RM 598.

Honestly, I was expecting more of Paris Hilton sunglasses haha. I mean not all of them are bad but not all of them are good either, in terms of design. When I think about Paris, I think about, glamour, luxury, bling bling, but most of the designs in this collection looks more or less like any other designs in the market. There are, however, a few that are very beautiful! And these are my favorites!
